Jambo! (English after Japanese)

以前も軽く触れましたが、ケニアには42の部族がいると言われています。

私が先週まで滞在していたOyugisは、ルオ族(ケニア人口の約1割)の地域でした。

小学生の女の子が教えてくれた、ルオの言葉を紹介したいと思います。

元気ですか？- Nango

はい、元気です。- Ber

あなたの名前は何ですか？ - Nyingi nga?

私の名前は〜です。 - Nginga en...

ありがとう - Erokamano

どういたしまして - Karibu

ごめんなさい - Mos

女の子 - Nyako

男の子 - Wuoi

家 - Ot

オレンジ - Machungwa

マンゴー - Maemo

小麦粉 - Mogo

先生 - Japuonj

腕輪 - Bangli

台所 - Jikon

鳥 - Winyo

ニワトリ - Gueno

料理人 - Tnoon

電話 - Simu

窓 - Dirisha

誰かが外であなたを呼んでいます。 - Ilvongi gi ngato e laro.

(※発音は自信がないのでお伝え出来ませんが、ほとんどローマ字読みだったと思います。)

多くのケニア人は英語を話せるので、現地語は必須ではないですが、現地語を話すと喜んでくれたりします。

私は、Erokamano(ありがとう)とビカ(スペルは分かりませんがcomeの意味。)くらいしか使っていませんでした。”ビカ”は、一緒に滞在していた5歳の男の子がルオ語しか分からなかったので、呼ぶ時いつもに使っていました。

ルオ族の住むビクトリア湖周辺を訪れる機会があれば、ぜひ"Nango!"と現地の人に話しかけてみてください。きっと、笑顔で返事をしてくれます！

As I said before, there are 42 tribes in Kenya.
In Oyugis where I had stayed for three weeks, Luo people live in. Luo account for about 10 percent in all the population in Kenya.
I will tell you some Luo words which the girl told me.

How are you? - Nango
I'm fine. - Ber
What is your name?  - Nyingi nga?
My name is... - Nginga en...
Thank you. - Erokamano
Welcome  - Karibu

Girl  - Nyako
Boy - Wuoi
House  - Ot
Orange  - Machungwa
Mango  - Maemo
Flour  - Mogo

Cook - Tnoon

Someone is calling you outside. - Ilvongi gi ngato e laro.

( I don't remember correct pronounce. But I think most of them are Latín alphabet reading.)

Most of the people in Kenya understand English so you can communicate in English. But if you speak local language, many local people will be happy.
I only use two words, Erokamano(Thank you) and Bika(I don't know the correct spelling but means "come"). I used Bika when I called the boy who stayed with us, he was 5 years old and he only understand Luo language.

If you have a chance to visit the place near the Lake Victoria, where Luo people live in, you can speak to people in Luo language like "Nango!". Maybe people will respond you with smile.
