新たな場所で
Jambo! (English after Japanese)
先週から、また別の地に移動しました。
首都のナイロビからバスで1時間弱の、Thikaという町にいます。
KIOF (Kenya Institute of Organic Farming) というNGOで、ボランティアとして活動しています。
(KIOFの詳細は、この記事の最後に書いています。)
農業は…実家の庭の畑を手伝った経験くらいです…。なので、日々新たな経験をしています。
多数のケニア人と、数名のウガンダ人に囲まれて生活しています。
2週間弱経ち、少しずつ慣れてきました。
そんな私の、最近の一日の流れを紹介しようと思います。
Since last week, I've stayed Thika where it takes about an hour from Nairobi by bus.
I come here as a volunteer of KIOF (Kenya Institute of Organic Farming).
(I wrote KIOF in details at the below.)
I haven't farmed a lot, I've only helped farming my house's garden. So everyday I've learned new things. There are many people from Kenya and a few people from Uganda. Now about two weeks passed, I'm getting used to hear little by little.
Today I would like to show you how the day it is here.
7:00 起床
朝食をとり、身支度をします。朝食はだいたいティーのみ。

I drink tea, change my clothes, brash my teeth...
8:30 家畜の世話
豚、ヤギにエサをあげます。
水が足りなくなっていたら、水もあげます。
牛は、小屋から牧草地へと移動させます。

We feed pigs and goats. If there are no water, we also give them water. And wr take cows to glass land from their hut.
10:30 ティータイム
ケニアで言うティーは、ミルクと砂糖がたっぷりのミルクティーのことです。ティーを飲みながら休憩します。

Kenyan tea is a milk tea with a lot of sugar. We enjoy tea and relax.
11:00 畑
メイズの収穫や、収穫済のメイズの苗を刈り取ります。刈り取った苗木は、家畜のエサになります。

We harvest maize, cut maize's glass and dry maize. Maize's glass becomes meals for animals.
13:00 ランチ
よく食べるのは、豆と米が混ざったものか、ギゼリ(豆とメイズを煮たもの)。

We often eat rice with beans or githeri(cooked beans and maize).
14:00 家畜の世話、畑
畑の片付けや、犬のエサを用意します。犬は、ペットではなく番犬です。ヤギや豚のエサも足りなくなっていたら足します。

We take care of vegetables fields and prepare the meal for dogs. Dogs are watchdogs, not pets. If goats and pigs need more food, we feed them again.
16:00 仕事終了
洗濯や、シャワー。シャワーは水なので、気温の下がる前の夕方に済ませます。あとは必要なものがあれば、近くのお店に行ったりもします。

I wash my clothes and take a shower. When I take shower, water is cold so I do it before night, when getting cooler. Also if I want to buy something, I go to small shop nearby.
19:30 夕食
夕食後は日記を書いたり、読書したり、メールやメッセージをチェックしたり、のんびりしています。

After dinner, I just relax, like writing diary, reading and checking email or messages.
22:00 就寝
カヤ必須です。

We have to use mosquito nets.
…平日はだいたいこんな生活をしています。
土日はフリーなので、どこかに出掛けたり、KIOFのディレクターの家におじゃまさせてもらったりしています。
...in weekdays, my life is such like this. In weekend, I have a free time so I often go out somewhere or visit KIOF directors' house.
最後に、KIOFについて。
Kenya Institute of Organic Farming
KIOFは、有機農業について学べる学校を運営するNGO(非政府組織)です。環境に優しく、美味しい野菜が採れる有機栽培をケニア中に広めるべく、1987年から活動しています。
キャンパスには、座学を受ける教室、コンピューター教室(生産物の売買に必要なPCスキルを学ぶため)、様々な野菜が栽培されている畑があり、豚、牛、ヤギなどの家畜も飼育されています。
1〜2週間などの短期間のコースから、長期の2年間のコース、インターネットを利用して自宅で受講出来るコースなどがあります。周辺の地域で農業を行う住民や、有機農業を学びたいという学生のほか、遠い地域からも農業を行う人が来るようです。

Finally, I will tell you about KIOF.
Kenya Institute of Organic Farming
KIOF is a technical training institution of organic farming, and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). They have started activities since 1987. Their aim is spreading organic farming, which is good for the environment and produce healthy and tasty vegetables, in Kenya.
In the campus, there are classrooms including PC room(Now farmers need PC skills when they sell and buy products.), fields for various vegetables, also there are many animals like cows, goats and pigs.
There are some courses such as 1-2 weeks or 2 years. Also there are distance learning courses. There are not only students from neighboring district, but also students from far places.
