マタツの乗り方

ケニアでよく見るこの乗り物が、マタツです。
小型のバスみたいなものです。
マタツの乗り方と、特徴を紹介します。
This vehicle is "matatu". You can see a lot of matatu in Kenya. It's like a small bus. Since I came here, I've used it so many times.
Today I will introduce you to how to use it and features of matatu.
利用方法
- 乗り場 乗り場はだいたい決まっています。しかし、「マタツ乗り場」みたいな看板は無いので、初めての場所では現地の人に聞いてみると良いでしょう。
- 乗車 マタツが来たら、添乗員に行き先を伝えてみましょう。行き先を通過する場合は、「オッケー！乗って！」という感じに言われるので乗ります。
- 運賃の支払い 席に座って一息つくと、運賃を支払うように言われます。運賃は、なるべくぴったりの額を渡すことをお勧めします。ぴったり払えない場合も、なるべく少額で渡しましょう。20シリング硬貨か、50シリング紙幣などがいいですね。多く渡すと、外国人にはお釣りがちゃんと返ってこなかったりするので注意しましょう。また、運賃が分からない場合は、近くの人に聞いてみましょう。添乗員に聞くと外国人価格になるので、乗客に聞くことをお勧めします。
- 降車 降車場所もだいたい決まっています。「次は○○に到着します」なんてアナウンスはありません。なので、現在地が分からなかったり、降りたい場所の名前は分かるけど初めてだからどんな場所か分からない、という時は、近くに座っている人に「ここどこ？○○で降りたいんだけど」と声を掛けてみましょう。そうするとほとんどの場合、着いた時に「ここだよ！」と教えてくれます。うっかりしていると、降りそびれたりするので気を付けましょう。
以上が、基本的なマタツの乗り方です。
また、始発地点のような所があります。マタツがずらっと並んでいて、歩いていると「どこ行くの？」と声を掛けられるので、行き先を言うと「じゃああのマタツだよ！」と教えてくれます。
マタツの特徴
- 常に満員 本来の定員は、おそらく14人です。しかし、ほとんどの場合それ以上の人が乗っています。2人掛けの所に3人、3人掛けの所に4人、木の板の即席補助席も登場します。小さい子は大人の膝の上に座ります。また、マタツに時刻表というものはありません。満員になったら出発します。満員に見えるので乗るのは無理だと思っても、「大丈夫！乗れるよ〜！」とか言われてぎゅうぎゅう詰めのマタツに乗ることもしばしば。
- 大音量の音楽 たいていの場合、ケニアの音楽が大音量で流されています。
- 揺れが激しい 道が全て舗装されているわけではないのと、運転が荒いせいでとても揺れます。頭上や壁、窓などに注意しましょう。
マタツのことだけで、これだけ長文を書いた自分に驚きます。笑
ケニアでマタツを利用する際の参考になればと思います。

The Way To Use Matatu
- The Place For Boarding Matatu Most of the case, you can board it at specific places. But there aren't signboard like "Matatu station"...So when you use it for the first time, you can ask local people like " Where should I wait for matatu? I want to go Nairobi"
- Taking a Matatu When matatu arrived, you can tell to conductor that where you want to go. He/She will say "Ok. You can ride this." or "Sorry but please use another one."
- Payment For Fee After you sit down, you will be asked to pay fees. I recommend to offer money precisely if you can. Even if you can't, you should offer money in small, like 20sh coin or 50sh bill. Because if you offer a lot of money, sometimes conductor will not give back change correctly especially for foreigners. Also I recommend to ask fee to neighbors if you don't know fee. I don't think it's a good idea that asking fee to conductor because they often tell expensive fee to foreigners...
- Getting Off It's same as boarding places, mostly you can get off matatu in specific places. But there aren't announcements like "Soon we will arrive Nairobi ." So if you don't know where you are in now, or you know the name of place but you don't know where it is, you can ask neighbors. Local people will be help you. If you relax too much on matatu, you will miss getting off so please be careful.
These were the way to use matatu basically. Also there are places like starting stations. There are many matatus. When you walk these places, conductors will ask you "Where do you want to go?" Then you will tell where you want to go. They will tell you which matatu you should board.
Features Of Matatu
- Always Crowded Maybe capacity is 14 people by all rights. But mostly there are more people boarding. Where capacity is two people, three people sit. Where capacity is three people, people sit four. Also you will see wooden booster seat. Children will sit on their parents. And there aren't time table for matatu. It will start when it will be full people. Sometimes I waited matatu then it seemed full so I thought I couldn't board it. But conductor said " No it's okay! You can board." so I used too full people matatu.
- Loud Music In most of matatu, you will hear Kenyan music very loudly.
- Intense Shaking Matatu is shaking intense because sometimes loads aren't maintained and some drivers drive roughly. Please be careful with overheard, wall and windows.
It was surprisingly that I wrote such a long only about matatu...lol
