The next destination after Athens was Cyprus, an island country places south of Turkey.

The main purpose of this trip was attending my friends wedding in Cyprus!
My Canadian friend got married with women from Cyprus. That’s why they had a wedding in Cyprus.

Welcome drinks was so cute.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180624231221j:image

The wedding started at the evening. It was around seven pm but it wasn’t dark because sundown was late here.

It held at the restaurant beside the beautiful beach.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180624231208j:image

Bride and groom vowed here. And theirs friend was a chairman of this wedding.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180624231216j:image

Finally it became dark.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180624231227j:image

After they vowed, it was a dinner time. At the restaurant, also brides father had a speech and cake cutting ceremony was held.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180624231212j:image

Moon was also beautiful.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180624231238j:image

After the dinner, we went outside again then we danced and danced all night.

My friend and his bride looked really happy, theirs friends and family everyone looked so happy too. We laughed a lot and also cried. The wedding was beautiful, wonderful and awesome!!!
Location was also amazing.
It was a first time for me to attend the wedding and it was really moving.
When I saw bride and groom, I felt happy too.

Someday I want to have such a beautiful wedding in the future, I don’t have a plan yet.

I really appreciated my friend to invited me on his wedding.
I was so happy to be there.
Also I thought, I won’t visit Cyprus if my friend didn’t invite me. Because I didn’t know nothing about Cyprus before this time (sorry...) It means I didn’t know it was a country name or not...

So next time I will share sightseeing memories.

Thank you so much for reading!!

Hello everyone!
Long time no see.

Now I’m in Cyprus.
Maybe not a few people don’t know where Cyprus is. But first, today I will share my short stay in Abu Dhabi as a transfer.
We left Tokyo to Abu Dhabi. The flight took about 11 hours. We left Tokyo before 6pm then we arrived Abu Dhabi around 0am.
We have over 8 hours until next flight to Istanbul. So we spent a few hours at the cafe at the airport then we went out a little although it was midnight.
It was midnight but outside was so hot and humid.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180604230041j:image

This is “Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque”. We wanted to go by bus but it seemed there were no buses at midnight so we went by taxi.

Unfortunatly we could enter mosque after 9am. So we couldn’t enter there because it was too early.

It was really beautiful with atmosphere of before sunrise although I saw it at a glance.

It reminded me “Aladin”.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180604230046j:image

It is a city center.

There were many tall buildings but it was around 5 am so street was quiet.f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180604230037j:image

We saw sunrise then backed to the airport.

It was really short stay. But first I felt cost was not so cheap in Abu Dhabi. I thought it was same as Japan or more expensive than Japan.
Another things was that it seemed there were many foreigners come there to work. Taxi driver we met was might Pakistanis. He said there were many people from various countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and etc worked in Abu Dhabi. It seemed really “business town”.
Actually there are not so many things we can do during midnight. But if you have a chance to visit Abu Dhabi, I recommend you visit mosques. It was worth to visit I think.
But of course you can stay at the airport during midnight. There were some restaurants open 24 hours and you can use free WiFi so you can stay at the airport comfortably.

Now I’ going Athens.
Thank you so much for reading!

Sabaidi!
I’ve arrived at Luangprabang.

Today I will share my experience of 20 hours bus from Chiangmai to here.
Actually it was not so hard than I thought.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180317214030j:image

16, March 9am
I was shocked when I found the bus. Because seats of bus was totally normal one, it wasn’t spacious and large seats although it’ll be a long journey.
I bought the bus ticket of Naga Travel. It costed about 47$. The cost may change depending on the company so if you choose more expensive one, maybe seats will be more comfortable.
I felt little shocked but anyway bus departed just around 9am.

12:00

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180317214035j:image

12am
Little break time at service area.

13:00

1pm

We arrived at Chiangrai, where places at north part. About 15 people joined so now there are around 25 people on the bus. But there are still space. So at least it was lucky because it was not full.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180317215135j:image

Water and snacks were served.

16:00

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180317214034j:image

税関のお兄さんに、「Oh you are from Japan. Are you alone?

4pm

We arrived Thai immigration. After that we passed bridge then we arrived Laos immigration. Laos immigration officer asked me” Oh you are from Japan. Are you alone? Sugoi(means ‘wow’ in Japanese)” Hahaha.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180317214031j:image

It took 7 hours from Chiangmai to the border of Laos.  I wonder if it won’t take 13 hours to get Luangprabang from here.

But as soon as we enter the Laos, I knew the reason why it took 13 hours.

It was the road of mountain, road was narrow and bumpy. The bus couldn’t run fast. That’s why...

21:00

9pm

Break time. I wonder if it was because of late time, only two restaurants opened.

Many European people ordered something but I wasn’t hungry so I just bought snacks then ate in the bus. Then bus driver might think I didn’t order at the restaurant because I didn’t have money so he gave me bananas. He was kind.

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180317215054j:image

17, 5am

Finally we arrived at the bus terminal. It wasn’t possible to go hotel on my foot but it was still dark so I went by tuktuk

On the bus, I ate, listened the music and slept a lot. Then it wasn’t so long and hard than I expected.

It haven’t took a lot of time since I arrived here. But even now I love this place. Not so noisy, wonderful nature, beautiful Mekong river...so nice. I’ll feel free and relax here lest of my travel time before back to Japan.

Sà wàtdii! (English after Japanese)

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180315143651j:image

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180315143804j:image

I’m in Thailand now.
I wish I could update one by one...I have so many experiences I want to share so even after back to Japan, I’ll continue to post them.

I traveled Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Chiang Mai for now. Today I’m going to share how I moved.

Singapore→Kuala Lumpur(KL)
From Singapore to KL, the capital city of Malaysia, I used the bus. It took about six hours. Cost may change a little depends on the company but mine was 20S$. I booked the bus ticket before through the Internet.
I used the bus of Sri Maju. Actually I didn’t remember why I choose this bus but maybe because of the price.
The bus seat was spacious and comfortable.

KL→Bangkok
I went Bangkok by airplane. I used AirAsia. It took two hours and it costed about 40$.(included 20kg luggage)
I like AirAsia because it’s cheaper. But sometimes it happens delay...At that time, my flight delayed two hours.
It’ll be also possible to go to Bangkok from KL by bus or train.

Bangkok→Chiangmai
I used the sleeping bus. It took about 10 hours and it costed about 20$. I left Bangkok before 9 pm then I arrived Chiangmai around 7 am.
I booked the bus before through the Internet. I was really hurried when I got to Bangkok because my flight was delayed. But I just regret that I should arrange my schedule not so tightly.

I preferred using bus from airport to bus terminal but I didn’t have enough time so I used taxi. Driver charged too expensive but I was tired to negotiate and I really hurried so I just paid...

Finally I arrived bus terminal. I asked some people to which bus should I take. But it seemed that they don’t understand English...They tried to help me but I was shocked and upset because I didn’t imagine people don’t understand English like that...Finally one lady understand English then she found bus for me. I really appreciated her.
It took 10 hours to get to Chiangmai but I slept almost all the time. So soon I arrived.

Tomorrow, I will leave here to Luangprabang. I’m little afraid of 20 hours bus. I hope I’ll get there safely!

f:id:SayuriYamamoto:20180311232624j:image

Today, I’d like to introduce “zomi”, tribe which I spent a lot of times in two weeks.
(Top photo: We volunteers and students decorated classroom with Japanese origami.)

First of all, have you heard about “zomi”?
I don’t think many people heard about it. It is said that there are thousandths of tribes in this world but maybe we don’t know most of them. Some people may remember “Rohingya” as a refugees from Myanmar because we’ve heard about it on the news recently.

Story I tell you now is based on zomi people I met in Malaysia and Malaysian people who support them.

In the past, zomi lived in one region. But during World War Two, some developed countries colonized and made new frontier. Then region where zomi lived was also divided into three. Now zomi people live in Myanmar, Thailand and Bangladesh.

Living in Malaysia isn’t theirs real goal.
In the school, where I did volunteer work, most of students were zomi from Myanmar.
The purpose of moving Malaysia is for better future. In Myanmar, zomi is minority group, so theirs position is weak and life is not easy. Theirs final goal aren’t living peacefully in Malaysia. They want to resettlement in USA, Australia or some countries where rich and get ready to accept various people.
(Resettlement: http://www.unhcr.org/en-my/resettlement.html)

Living in Malaysia as a refugee is still difficult. If people are accepted as a refugee, they are still lucky. Before being accepted as a refugee, they are seemed as staying illegally, so they have to live carefully and quietly. If they are found by police before they are accepted as a refugee, they will be arrested. It seems that many people avoid being arrested by paying money though.

Working is also difficult for refugees. Because they are refugees, employment don’t give much salaries. In addition to the language barrier, it’s often happen that refugees can find only simple and easy jobs. So there are no choices but they live in a house with another one or two families.

What should they do for resettlement?
Do you know what refugees have to do for resettlement?
UNHCR are in charge for resettlement of refugees. First refugees have to apply that they are “refugees” to UNHCR. After they are recognized as a refugees, next they apply that they want to resettlement. If UNHCR accept it, finally they achieve their wishes. But actually it is not so easy. It seems that whether they can resettlement or not is just depends on their “luck”. As you can imagine, there are so many refugees want to resettlement. Maybe that’s why UNHCR can’t choose who deserves to resettlement first depending on their financial situation or how long they are waiting for...
But it doesn’t mean “resettlement is impossible”. It is difficult but still there are possibilities. Actually from the school I did volunteer work, three children’s family moved another country as a resettlement in last January.

Education isn’t also enough.
This school are managed by churches. Zomi people are Christian.
Student are supposed to pay 100 ringgit (about 25$?) but actually only half of them pay. But even if they can’t pay, school don’t let students out.
School lunch are supported by Chinese church.
Teachers are also refugees, and they don’t have teaching license. Also there are no educational curriculum or something like that. As a result, students can’t enjoy enough education.
Teachers are given salaries by student’s educational fee.
We call it “school” but there are very little children too. So actually it is like school with nursery. Because some students can’t pass the entrance exam for upper school, there are also some older students like 13 or 14 years old. Total of students are about 70 people.

School are managed quietly and secretly.
Not many neighbors recognize as a school for refugees.
I’m not sure that neighbors really don’t know about school for refugees. But at least school try not to be recognized as a school for refugees. There are no signboard like “ABC school”. First I came to school, I was surprised because it doesn’t seem school by seeing outside.
Do you understand why school try to do such like that? As I said, some people aren’t recognized as a refugees, meaning they stay in illegal. That why school are managed secretly.

What can we do for them?
In this work camp, we had 17 Japanese volunteers. We thought what we can do for them only in 2 weeks(some of us were 1 week).
We can’t ask UNHCR to “Please give permission for them to resettlement”.
What we can do is loving children. It is what everyone can do without special skills or something like that, isn’t it?
Most of their parents are busy for working. Teachers are also not enough. So children may not be took care a lot by adults.
We played, talked, laughed, hugged with children...Such like this, we spent much time with children.
It is very simple. But I think it’s really important for them because they understand “There are someone are caring about us.”
Childrens’ smile made me happy and cheerful.
Many students are so kind, friendly and energetic.
While farewell party, I couldn’t stop crying.
One girl swiped my tears with her hand.
It was only two weeks but it was really precious time for me. I was so happy to meet them.
I really hope their future will be successful and peaceful.

Thank you so much for reading!
